If you are looking for a backpack sewing pattern that’s fun then you will absolutely love my shark backpack pattern. Buckle up as I’m going to show you exactly how to make this adorable shark backpack. I’ll take you through the process step-by-step. This is a new and improved version of the Shark Pencil Case pattern that includes several new features and improvements based on feedback from the free pattern users.
Features of the Shark Backpack
- Side Gussets: The biggest comment we had about the free pattern was that there was bunching around the sides of the mouth, so I’ve taken that out with the addition of side gussets.
- Hidden Strap Connectors: These are cleverly designed into the back of the backpack.
- Back Zipper Pocket: Works as a security pocket since it’s against your back.
- Interior Pockets: Includes another zipper pocket, pen slots, and a slip pocket for additional storage.
- Fabric Versatility: You can mix up the fabrics or use the same one throughout. While cotton or cotton canvas is recommended, you can also use faux leather if you’re more experienced with bag-making.
- Pen Slots and Slip Pocket: For organizing your essentials.
Materials Needed
- Pattern Pieces: Make sure you have downloaded and printed all your pattern pieces.

- Fabric:
- Cotton, cotton canvas, or faux leather (if you’re more experienced).

- One long zipper for the mouth.
- One shorter zipper for the back.

- Two shoulder straps.
- Use a lighter to seal the edges of the webbing.

Required Sewing Skill Level
This project is suitable for those who have some basic sewing skills. If you’re comfortable with your sewing machine and have made a few projects before, you should be good to go. If you’re a bit more advanced and into bag making, you might want to try using faux leather, like I did in this tutorial. I’ll share tips and tricks along the way for working with faux leather.
What’s Special About This Backpack Pattern?
This backpack pattern is a new and improved version with loads of features. We’ve listened to your feedback and made some great enhancements. The biggest change is the addition of side gussets to prevent the bunching around the sides of the mouth, which was a common complaint with the free pattern.
